Floating logs
Article Abstract:
Controversial Indonesian lumber magnate Prajogo Pangestu is planning to offer public shares in his new company, Barito Pacific Timber. The rising price of Indonesian plywood, Pangestu's proven business success and the reasonable price of the shares make this an attractive offer to investors. However, Pangestu's solvency is in question since he began investing in diverse and expensive projects outside the timber industry. Furthermore, the Indonesian government may raise taxes on loggers in an attempt to shore up revenues. Pangestu's ties with the government add to investors' concern.

Mates of the moment: Australia finds an ideal Asian partner in Vietnam
Article Abstract:
Australia has established strong ties to Vietnam thanks to considerable diplomatic, commercial, and personal investment. Many observers consider them the most influential Western country in Vietnam, and at the end of 1994 their financial investment was more than that of any N American or European country at $684 million. Senior officials have exchanged official visits to cement ties, and Australia has been a leader in restoring Vietnam's links to the rest of the world. Human rights issues remain a major difference though.
