The next battle
Article Abstract:
The political leaders of Southeast Asia face problems beyond the financial crisis in the region. The crisis is challenging the nations' social and political organization, as well as their economic ideologies. Many Southeast Asian countries already had underlying problems, including racial tensions and income inequalities, but reaction remained controlled whilst economies were developing. The task of maintaining stability will grow more difficult. Political protests are already occurring in Indonesia and the Philippines, and Thailand has had to make political changes. Malaysia appears to be more stable.

Taking sides
Article Abstract:
Supporters of Malaysia's Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have controlled the country's largest press conglomerate since 1992. His bid for deputy presidency of the United Malays National Organization political party has received a corresponding boost. Rival papers have challenged this position, finally breaking the monolithic pro-government block that the nation's press once was. Some regard this as a healthy sign of freedom; others condemn the replacement of objectivity with partisan politics.
