Follow the money
Article Abstract:
Monetarism, the view that faster money-supply growth inevitably brings higher inflation, could see a revival in popularity. The European Central Bank is likely to announce that it will adopt a money-supply growth target following the launch of the European single currency in Jan 1999, and research indicates that pan-European measures of money are far more stable than data for individual countries. The money supply can often offer a useful early warning, and should therefore be scrutinized by central bankers.
