Footwear in Germany

Footwear production in Germany fell to around 40 million pairs in 1997, worth around 2.2 billion deutschemarks. Imports were worth 7.4 billion deutschemarks, accounting for 85% of footwear sold. Exports were worth 2.0 billion deutschemarks. The best known brands include Deichmann, Salamander and Adidas. There are 8,500 specialist footwear retailers in Germany, representing around 70% of total footwear sales. Production is expected to continue to decline, and imports from Italy are expected to increase.

The number of people eating breakfast cereals in Germany is increasing, and the total market is estimated at 1.06 billion deutschemarks. Imports have risen rapidly and exports rose by 20% in 1997. Muesli represents around 27% of the market, but the traditional cornflakes sector has declined y around 7% a year. Mass-media advertising spending was 88 million deutschemarks in 1997, most of which is accounted for by Kellogg and Cereal Partners.
