For U.S. airlines, a shakeout runs into heavy turbulence

Major United States airlines are losing money after 27 years of deregulation, the industry lost $32.3 billion between 2001 and 2004. They are caught between cutting costs or raising fares to create profit and cannot reasonably do either. Airlines are subsidized by the government and there is not a natural course of the less successful competitors falling by the wayside.
