Former phone monopoly starts ringing bells for analysts
Article Abstract:
Former telecommunications monopoly Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd. is seeing analysts recommending 'buy' for the company's stocks following years of falling share prices due to the deregulation in the Hong Kong telecommunications industry. Simon Yeung, telecommunications analyst at Lippo Industries, attributed the latest appeal of Hong Kong Telecom's to the company's successful revenue rebalancing. Yeung added that Hongkong Telecom's expansion and development into other businesses allowed to reduce reliance on revenue from international direct-dialing traffic. Other analysts still contend that the company should see strong earnings in the future due to its flexibility and proficiency in other sectors of the industry.

Asian funds are regaining their allure, managers say; but contrarians point to risk of private debt levels, unproven corporate-reform measures
Article Abstract:
60 Fund managers are advising investors to go back to Asia since the worst of the economic crisis is over. Financial advisers and fund managers agree that a recovery process is well on its way in such countries as South Korea, Thailand and Singapore and is expected to continue well into the new millennium. The desirability of the Asian market is, therefore, viewed through a medium- to long-range lens due to the economic reforms and stimulus measures that are already in place.
