France: Sales of sweeteners, diet and nutritional sugar
Article Abstract:
Nutritional sugar is a successful market sector in France, though it is difficult to communicate on its health allegations, says Actisucre (Beghin-Say group), the leading player. Rival operator, Saint Louis Sucre, the leader in diet sugar with its Tutti Free brand which holds 60% of the market, has not performed very well in sweeteners where its Carte Blanche brand has been overtaken by Hermesetas. The latter, owned by Swiss group, Hermes, has an estimated 5 to 8.1% of the sweetener market by volume, behind Canderel, the indisputable leader whose sales by volume and by value rose by 6.2% and 7.4% respectively, in the year to October 2001. Following the introduction of nomadic products, Canderel is now interested in new client targets (men, younger consumers) in order to increase the penetration rate of sweeteners in France (worth 30% today).

FRANCE: NEW PRODUCTS IN THE SWEETENER MARKET
Article Abstract:
Canderel cornered 54% of the sweetener market in France in the year to 22 October 2000, up 1.8% by volume, up 2.4% by value with 65.5% of the market. Following were own-label brands with 30.8% of the volume market (up 1.5%) and 23.6% by value, up 1%. Carte Blanche took 6.2% of the market by volume (down 14.3%) and 5.6% by value, down 16.8% followed by Hermesetas with 2.5 and 1.8% respectively. The latter will take advantage of a FFr 14mn communication investment in 2001, up 35% from the year before, from the Swiss company, Hermes. Both Hermes and Canderel launched a pocket version of their sweeteners in an attempt to attract men who eat outside of their homes. This might help develop this market, which has been stagnant in recent years, with 28,247 sugar units, down 0.2% and a FFr 415.3mn turnover, up 0.4% during the year to 1 October 2000.

FRANCE: SWEETENER SALES ARE SLUGGISH
Article Abstract:
The growth of the French sweetener market is slowing down, with only a 0.7% rise in volume and a 2.4% rise in value for the twelve months ending 5 July 1998, calculated monthly, despite a price cut in March 1998 by Canderel, the market leader with over 50% of the volume market share. Canderel is counting on its new pocket dispenser to boost sales. It also plans to launch a promotion of 20% more for free on the 300-unit dispenser.
