France expands reach as carrier takes up role
Article Abstract:
The entry into service of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle has brought with it a power projection capability unimagined by the French Navy. Capt Edouard Guillaud, the ship's commanding officer, said the de Gaulle is twice as powerful as its predecessor, the Foch but has a lesser number of crew. It can also generate 100 combat missions per day with its complement of 40 aircraft. These could be in the form of five 'alpha strikes' of up to 20 to 25 aircraft each at targets up to 400n miles away.
