Freefall
Article Abstract:
The US dollar has dropped in value in relation to both the German mark and Japanese yen in early Oct 1998. This fall could be linked to hedge funds' activities as they unwind position involving the purchase of dollar assets using borrowings in cheap yen. There is also greater optimism that Japan can tackle its economic problems, while US economic growth appears likely to slow in 1999. There are a number of factors exerting downward pressure on the dollar, but forced selling, increased illiquidity and panic are likely to have contributed to the sharp drop seen in early Oct 1998.

The world's new currency worries
Article Abstract:
There is concern about the drop in value of the US dollar which has fallen in relation to the Japanese yen. This has occurred although the US economy is growing and the Japanese economy is shrinking. US interest rates could fall, while Japan's are so low they are unlikely to drop further. The US current account deficit is also causing concern, in contrast to the current account surplus of Japan and the euro area. Meanwhile US stock prices continue to rise though stocks appear overvalued.
