Both Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif and India's current government, led by Deve Gowda, appear to be seeking a thaw in relations. Indian foreign minister Kumar Gujral and his counterpart in Pakistan, Gohar Ayub Khan, plan to meet in Apr 1997 to discuss a possible transition toward peaceful coexistence.
