Full house: prisons
Article Abstract:
The UK prison population has reached record proportions and is growing at a rate of moe than 200 per week. As of July 1997, the population stands at 62,000, within 500 of the country's maximum prison capacity. Alternative incarceration methods, such as prison ships, electronic tagging, community service and private prisons all are being considered as possible methods to alleviate the problem. A last resort under the 1982 Criminal Justice Act is to release non-violent prisoners who have six months or less to serve.
