The tea industry in India is facing recession due to the hike in excise duties and the price crash. The price of dust tea now is Rs64.61 per kg (Rs87.09 per kg in 1997-98). The price of leaf tea is Rs69.39 kg (Rs85.03 per kg). The production of tea in 1998-99 is expected to be more than 810 million kg in 1997- 98. The Government of India has increased the excise duty for branded tea. The total quantity of branded tea sold in India is about 2.40 lakh tonnes per annum. (gs)
