Article Abstract:
Freedom of the press in Hong Kong after China takes control on July 1, 1997, remains a perplexing issue in the wake of recent official comments from top Chinese officials. Information minister Zeng Jianhui claims the press will be free to report anything other people say, but not to expressly advocate any positions deemed contrary to China's interests, such as independence for Taiwan. Editors and journalists are already reportedly censoring their own articles, in part due to China's criticisms and the fear they engender.

China eclipse
Article Abstract:
The economic crisis in Asia has prompted a decline in confidence among investors in Hong Kong. However, China has not been criticized for Hong Kong's difficulties. Indeed, a public-opinion survey indicates a rise in the number of people who are satisfied with China's handling of Hong Kong's affairs. Wider economic problems have served to overshadow concerns about the possibility of China sparking off a political crisis in Hong Kong.
