Gainers and losers
Article Abstract:
The companies that had the most impressive growth in turnover and profitability in the 'Interational Management' magazine's list of the European Community's (EC) top 500 companies in 1990 were either companies that increased turnover through acquisitions or those that returned to profitability after recovering from heavy losses incurred in previous years. One company that managed both was Tractebel, the Belgian construction company that improved its turnover by 774% and its profitability by 566%. Other companies that grew impressively were Porsche, the German automaker that improved turnover by 105%, and Aegis, the British advertising company that boosted its profits by a hefty 395%. On the other hand, the poorest performers in the top 500 were those in the transport and electronics sectors such as Philips, Machines Bull, British Rail and Iberia.

Risers and fallers
Article Abstract:
The companies that are newly listed in the 'International Management' magazine's survey of the European Community's (EC) top 500 companies are largely the result of acquisitions and mergers activity in Europe. These newly ranked companies include such new entities as Pinault, which was created after a takeover, and Isosceles, which was formed after a management buy-out. Similarly, most of the companies that have been left out of the 1990 top EC 500 companies list are those which have been subject to takeovers. Some of these companies, however, are those that have fallen victim to the ravages of recession, such as Polly Peck and Hudson Place Investments, two British firms that have disappeared into receivership.

Variations in the climate
Article Abstract:
The 'International Management' magazine's survey of the European Community's (EC) top 500 companies in 1990 reveals sharp variations in the fortunes of companies based in different EC countries. Spanish, German and French companies were the best performers in 1990, with turnover increasing by margins of between 8% and 13%, while profit growth was pegged at between 7% and 9%. British, Belgian and Italian companies, on the other hand, were among the worst performers among the EC's top 500 companies. Companies based in the smaller EC states posted mixed results, with Danish companies performing quite well, while Irish companies fared somewhat poorly.
