Game over
Article Abstract:
Indonesian companies Sekar Bumi and Sekar Laut achieved strong growth in the period to 1994, mainly through shrimp processing. However, the Sekar group began to experience difficulties when its founders, the five Harry brothers, developed an interest in financial market dealing. Sekar is now unable to pay its creditors, and has only managed to survive through the intervention of Bank Negara Indonesia, which has supported it because it employs many people. The company's experiences are a clear example of how some Asian conglomerates have been unwise to diversify.

Shaky bonds
Article Abstract:
The US presidential primaries and an announcement by Japan's finance minister both have international bond markets in a turmoil, though it may subside in the short term. The bond-market rally in 1995 derived largely from a belief the US would eliminate its deficit, but the emphasis has now shifted to cutting taxes, which could inflate the deficit. Further, Wataru Kubo suggested in late Feb that interest rates might be too low, threatening those who borrow yen, convert them into dollars, and buy US Treasuries.

Flood waters rising
Article Abstract:
Investment analysts are concerned that upcoming stock issuances of private and privatizing concerns in Indonesia may result in a glut on the market. Demand for Indonesian companies going public has also been dampened by the government's role in the riots of July, 27, 1996. Private firms planning to issue stock are concerned that the giant issuances the government plans as part of a privatization program will soak up all available funds.
