Gays and the Australian economy

Sydney, Australia, claims that it is the gay capital of the world, and both money and politics have been important in the advances of gays in cultural life. The Mardi Gras festival, held in Sydney every Feb, injects almost $64 million into the economy of Sydney. The event was initially a political protest, but the political battles have been largely won, and the focus will be more on having a good time in the 2000 Mardi Gras. gays are no longer banned in Australia's armed forces.

Sales for the machine-tool industry in Japan have dropped 43% so far in 1992, and there is no recovery in sight. This bodes poorly for the Japanese economy, as capital spending accounted for 55% of real growth in the gross national product from 1986 to 1990.
