German companies enjoy a busy beginning to the year

Cross-border acquisitions in Europe increased in 1st qtr 1995 compared with 1st qtr 1994. There were 412 companies acquired in 1st qtr 1995 compared with 378 in 1st qtr 1994, with a total value of 8.7 billion pounds sterling compared with 5.3 billion pounds in this period. Germany accounted for the largest sum spent by a country at 1.7 billion pounds sterling, though more acquisitions were made by companies from France, the UK and the US. US firms have acquired 105 companies and invested 1.3 billion pounds sterling.

Professionals involved in the acquisitions and merger business find that their work often entails a certain amount of travelling both within the United Kingdom and abroad. Research showed travel expenditure is an important outgoing cost for companies and around 75% of these businesses control workers travel arrangements. Although business travel is seen as time consuming and difficult some aspects such as the availability of duty free products and experiencing different cultures are viewed positively.
