Give and take
Article Abstract:
Booming construction in Asia has generated a need for migrant workers such as in Malaysia where foreign workers make up 80% of the construction workforce. Thailand is in the double position of being a major labor exporter, over 400,000 in 1994, and a labor importer from Burma to work on northern Thailand construction projects. However, locals blame the migrant workers for crime, disease and other social programs while some companies exploit illegal laborers through lower pay, few benefits and poor housing.

New directions
Article Abstract:
Vietnam's press remains under the strict control and supervision of the communist government. Government officials hold regular meetings with editors to discuss which issues should be given prominence in the papers and to assess the social and political effects of past coverage. Though there have been attempts by Vietnam's press to be bolder in denouncing government corruption, it is clear that the state still has the final say in deciding when the discussion of any issue should be dropped.

Land of hope: Vietnam gives farmers greater security of tenure
Article Abstract:
A 1993 Vietnamese law grants long-term land-use rights to the country's peasant population in an attempt to encourage investments in land improvements. The law allows 20-year leases on land used for annual crops and also cuts farm taxes. Maximum size of a family's holdings is set at three hectares. Falling food prices and underemployment have made Vietnam's farmers some of the poorest in Asia.
