Figures and forecasts are leading to fears that economic growth is on the decline in Europe. Of the European Union nations, Italy appears to be facing the greatest economic woes. In addition to sizable debt constraints, it is experiencing a downturn in some of its biggest industries due to competition from China.

There is optimism concerning the European Union economic performance, as world leaders meet at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Job creation and wages have been flat in the past year. Gross domestic product forecasts for the European Union project 2 percent to 2.2 percent growth in 2006.
