Going global, Thais style
Article Abstract:
Thailand's Dusit Thani hotel group is expanding overseas aggressively but encountering related problems. It markets Thai service and culture, but Thailand offers a relatively slim management base. Emphasizing flexibility and service can raise costs in high-wage countries, and management cultures clashed when the firm bought Germany's Kempinski chain in 1994. Profits are still weak in the wake of that purchase, though Dusit Thani is forging ahead in Indonesia as well as in Europe.
