Great leap southward
Article Abstract:
Beijing has ordered state-owned firms in Hong Kong to start an investment drive to boost the economy before the Chinese take over in 1997. Chinese firms are being used blatantly for political reasons, which could backfire. The drive could weaken relations between independent firms and Beijing, and may not even be effective because the Chinese firms are relatively small. The firms will probably follow the Communist Party directive, which could be construed as a breach of the Cantonese culture ethic that would forbid mixing business with politics.

Spot that spy: counter-espionage fever grips China's bureaucrats
Article Abstract:
Chinese leaders are backing a campaign for heightened state security due to what some officials consider a serious and escalating problem, nearly 300 major leaks in 1994. The Guangdong Dept of State Security developed a traveling counter-espionage exhibition, and authorities are training state-security operatives. Foreigners on business trips are particularly under suspicion, most notably those from Taiwan and Hong Kong. However, two Hong Kong reporters easily entered the off-limits exhibition.

The sound of silence: Is Beijing reinterpreting the Tiananmen protest?
Article Abstract:
Beijing's lack of response to a US film shown in Hong Kong in Apr 1996, about the 1989 Tiananmen Square movement, may reflect a reconsideration of the issue by China's leaders. Insiders say the party and government are trying to discuss the topic more reasonably now, and recent official accounts refer to it as a 'political disturbance' rather than a 'counter-revolutionary rebellion.' A similar reexamination of a 1976 protest movement enabled Deng Xiaoping to seize power.
