Growing up in Singapore requires balancing of conflicting values for kids like Fabian Tan
Article Abstract:
Singapore society is known for its highly structured character and its emphasis on rigid discipline. As the tiny island-nation grows in affluence, it is slowly becoming more Westernized and many are expressing concern about the effect all this is having on the younger generation. Unlike their predecessors, today's children of Singapore are more worldly and are more inclined to question things. They are torn between the ideas taught to them by their parents and the Western concepts they absorb through media.

'Kiasu' cartoon figure strikes a chord by making fun of Singaporean mentality
Article Abstract:
'Kiasu' is a character invented by cartoonist Johnny Lau as a criticism of Singaporeans' obsession with being the best in everything. Today, Kiasu has insinuated himself into the island-nation's popular culture and his name has become a term for describing the peculiarly materialistic Singaporean mindset. Some attribute the Kiasu phenomenon to Singapore's pre-economic-takeoff economy, where materialism was actively encouraged to promote performance.

In Singapore, critics snipe at each other
Article Abstract:
The press and the academe have traditionally served as critics of government in many democracies around the world. In Singapore, however, there is a pervasive aversion to criticism of the authorities so the press and the academe end up attacking each other as they have often done in the past. The two sides often trade accusations regarding their common timidity when it comes to criticism of the government.
