Gummer allows Garsington opera festival to continue
Article Abstract:
John Gummer, environment secretary, is allowing the Garsington annual operative festival to continue. This follows a planning appeal and public inquiry where opera company chairman and owner of Garsington Manor Leonard Ingrams, appealed against South Oxfordshire District Council's failure to reach a decision on his application for planning permission to erect temporary structures and a change of land use. There had been opponents to the festival due to noise and disturbance, but the inspector recommended subject to certain conditions, such as the use of acoustic screens and restricting public performances.

Northumbrian RIBA plans a better life for Newcastle
Article Abstract:
The Cityscape project, the Northumbrian RIBA branch initiative aims for a new vision of urban life in Newcastle upon Tyne, incorporating public squares, a tramway system and traffic-free areas. Nine public spaces and locations in the city centre have been examined in the Streets for People report and recommendations include a new public square, pedestrian links between the city centre and the railway station and a tramway link between the city centre and the Quayside. Reduced traffic access to the city centre is envisaged and there would be 'green links' around car parks and pedestrian routes.
