HARNESSING INDIA'S MINERAL RESOURCES
Article Abstract:
With a total area of 3.28 million square kilometre and hard rock area of 2.42 million square kkilometres (km), India's resource position is comfortable. This has lead to development of core industrial sectors like steel, thermal power, cement, aluminium, copper and chemicals. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) in recent years has discovered many new metals. Molybdenum mineral occurrences have been found in Tamil Nadu. Gold is found to occur in Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and in Bastar of Madhya Pradesh. Diamond bearing pipe rocks have been found in Bastar and Raipur of Madhya Pradesh and Wajarakarur area of Andhra Pradesh. Virgin coal fields have been found in Ib river coal fields of Orissa. Metallurgical grade coal has been located in Sohaghpur, Madhya Pradesh and superior grade coal fields in Raniganj, West Bengal and in Ramkola, Mand-Raigarh coalfields of Madhya Pradesh.(uh)

Shivaji Estate Livestock Farms of Nagpur is setting up a sheep rearing project on 1000 acres at Baramati in Maharashtra. It is estimated that India had the highest sheep population in the world at 131 million in 1996 and that 45 percent of this brings Rs41 billion through products like meat, milk, skins, fibre, hair and offal. It is estimated that 75 percent of this value is from meat, 12.9 percent from skins and 7.3 percent from offal while 3.2 percent is from milk. (khr)

The unseasonal rains during November 1997 affected onion crop in producing areas like Lasalgaon near Nashik. The prices of onions and potatoes almost doubled in the last two months. In Mumbai market, the price of potatoes have risen from Rs6 a kilogram (kg) to Rs14 per kg in just 45 days while prices of onion is ruling at Rs12 to Rs14 per kg as compared to Rs6 per kg during end-May.
