Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd's (HPCL) Mumbai and Vizag refineries processed 11.4 million tonnes during 1996-97. The Vizag refinery operated at 108 percent and the Mumbai refinery at 119 percent capacity utilisation. HPCL sold 15.5 million tonnes per annum (tpa) of products during 1996-97. During 1996-97, the company managed to achieve volume growth of 2.5 percent in lube sales at 207,000 tonnes. HPCL has a three million tpa capacity product pipeline from Mumbai to Pune. The Vizag refinery is being expanded from 4.5 million tpa to 7.5 million tpa at a cost of Rs10 billion. The company's other projects to be implemented include a multi product 356-kilometre (km) pipeline between Vizag to Vijaywada, LPG import facilities at Mangalore with 0.6 million tpa capacity at a cost of Rs1.76 billion. HPCL is also implementing a 332 km pipeline between Mangalore and Bangalore, and a 175 km pipeline between Deoghar and Miraj. HPCL has tied-up with French companies including Colas SA for Bitumen emulsions with 20,000 tpa capacity near Mumbai, and for a six million tpa refinery at Punjab, west coast refinery with six million tpa with Total SA for L&G import and re-gasification terminal in southern India. MADRAS REFINERY (MRL)

Madras Refinery (MRL) currently operates two refineries with its Manali refinery's capacity being increased to over 6.5 million tonnes per annum (tpa) from 2.5 million tpa. The Manali refinery processed 6.97 million tonnes of crude oil in 1996-97 against 7.31 million tonnes processed in 1995-96. The company's overall capacity utilisation was 102 percent in 1996-97. MRL produced 15,500 tonnes of paraffin wax and 31,123 tonnes of petroleum products during 1996-97. MRL has the capacity to manufacture 17,00 tonnes of propylene and 25,000 tonnes of hexane. MRL is implementing a diesel hydro desulphurisation project of 1.8 million tpa capacity at a cost of Rs4.24 billion. The Manali refinery's capacity would be expanded by three million tpa with Rs17 billion investment. MRL would set up a power project through a tie-up with CEA India Inc of the US. (pc)

COCHIN REFINERY (CRL)
Article Abstract:
The government of India holds 55 percent stake in Cochin Refinery (CRL). CRL has one refinery on the western coast in South India. It is currently operating an aggregate refining capacity of 7.5 million tonne per annum (tpa). The company processed 7.3 million tonnes of crude oil in 1996-97. The company sold 64,413 tonnes of benzene, toulene and 6,461 tonnes of polybutylene in 1996-97. CRL would replace its existing crude pipeline with larger capacity at a cost of Rs737 million by December 1998. The company is also expanding the capacity of hydro desulphurisation from 7.5 million tpa to 10.5 million tpa at a cost of Rs15 billion. (pc)
