The death of Edmond Safra and the acquisition of Republic New York has put HSBC Holdings PLC's retention of clients into question. The company plans to make as few changes as possible by allowing Republic to continue management in some areas of the U.S. where HSBC is not present.

NatWest has two weeks to fight bid

Bank of Scotland PLC, in a document formally declaring its intent to buy National Westminster Bank PLC (NatWest), has given the target bank two weeks to disclose how it will defend itself against the hostile bid. Bank of Scotland has offered 21.5 billion pounds sterling for NatWest. Some observers think that Royal Bank of Scotland PLC or other companies could launch bids rivaling Bank of Scotland's.
