HSBC posts 21% decline in net for '98

HSBC Holdings PLC posted a decline in net profit of 21% for the 1998 year. In addition, the company's bad loan provisions in Asia more than doubled to US$1.96 billion. HSBC posted US$4.32 billion in net profits. This figure was toward the lower end of what analysts had predicted. HSBC also stated that it would attempt to gain a share listing on the New York Stock Exchange as part of its efforts to improve on its global status.
