Habibie under siege? Elections will be the real test
Article Abstract:
The acid test of Indonesian President B.J. Habibie's political mettle will come in Indonesia's election, where the Indonesian public decides on his political future. Habibie must go through with the election, having promised democratic elections to a disenchanted Indonesian electorate tired of government inefficiencies in dealing with the economy and the attending social unrest over high consumer prices. While projections on Habibie's chances for reelection are unclear, Habibie's party, the Golkar, is not expected to survive the elections, given the public support for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Megawati Sukarnoputri and the National Message Party of Amien Rais.

Backwardness in Singapore
Article Abstract:
A comparison of the way elections are conducted in Singapore and Indonesia shows that Indonesia is far ahead in terms of a peaceful transformation into a democratic form of government. In contrast to the happiness shown by an Indonesian going to the polls, a Singaporean shows fear of reprisal in case the government finds out whom one voted for. Reprisal comes in the form of losing one's work or being restricted from getting a flat in the public housing system. Another intimidating factor is the fear of being arrested and incarcerated without trial.
