Hair washing products include conditioners, shampoos and products which combine both shampoo and conditioner. It is predicted the UK retail market for hair washing products will show continuous growth between 1998-2003. Sales in 1998 were worth 548.4 million pounds sterling. Some 44.1% of hair care products were purchased through grocery stores. Pantene made by Proctor and Gamble was the highest selling 2-in-one product during 1998, taking 19.1% of value sales. Pantene was also the best selling conditioner accounting for 15.4% of the market and of shampoo with value sales of 15.9%.

UK sales of hair washing products were worth 391 million pounds sterling in 1996, an increase of 28.6% from 304 million pounds sterling in 1992. Hair washing products make up 53.1% of the overall hair care market, which was worth 736 million pounds sterling in 1996. Fashion trends show increasing demand for health-orientated shampoos and conditioners. Forecasters estimate market value at 429 million pounds sterling by 2001, led by demand for products which are designed for specific types of hair. Haircare products for men, children and older people are potential growth sectors.

The United Kingdom retail market for shampoo grew 12% by value to 255 million pounds sterling in 1993 from 228 million pounds sterling in 1992. Shampoos account for 35.5% of the hair care market by value. The total hair care market is expected to grow more than 12% to 759 million pounds sterling by 1998 based on 1992 prices. Procter & Gamble accounted for 31% of the shampoo market by value in 1993. The conditioner and shampoo sectors are expected to be greatly impacted by the new 3-in-1 products.
