Plans to make the transition to a single currency in at least a few European countries have been hampered by recent turmoil in financial markets caused by capital flight out of Spain, Sweden and Italy. Criteria for nations to join the monetary union may be altered.

Article Abstract:
The European exchange rate mechanism has been under a lot of pressure as at least half of its currencies have either been devalued or have left the system. It is hoped that the German central bank's action of lowering the interest rate may help stem the tide.
