Article Abstract:
Mismanagement by Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad has made deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim more popular, both at home and abroad, but the nation's political climate could make Ibrahim's acclaim dangerous. Political observers conjecture that Anwar's popularity could cause a leadership challenge in 1999, when Malaysia's ruling party must hold elections. Mahathir's 16 years in power have given him dominance over all government processes, but the deputy premier has gained popular support and remains politically astute.

Language problem: radio station attacked over use of English
Article Abstract:
A recent attack on Time Highway Radio by the newspaper Utusan Malaysia illustrates Malaysia's chronic problems balancing English and the official language, Bahasa. The newspaper, closely linked to the ruling United Malays National Org, noted that the station's Bahasa content was less than 30%, below its 40% requirement, and none was in prime time. English has long been popular nationwide, especially high in govt and commerce, and many critics of the attack say Malays must learn English to keep up internationally.

Two thumbs down: Malaysia may nix plans for wafer-fabrication plant
Article Abstract:
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad of Malaysia shelved in late Jan 1996 a planned $1.2-billion wafer-fabrication plant, putting at risk a new industrial park and the country's high-tech manufacturing plans. Mahathir reportedly thinks Malaysia may have given Japan's Hitachi and S Korea's LG Group too good a deal. The plant was to anchor the new Kulim Technology Park, a $393 million project. Some analysts think a wafer glut is coming in several years, but Singapore plans a third one and Thailand a second nonetheless.
