Hit the brakes
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, announced a number of new economic policies on 5 December 1997 which aim to overcome Malaysia's current economic crisis. The plans include cutting government spending by 18%, reducing government minister's salaries by 10% and postponing new overseas projects. Anwar has worked with one of Malaysia's most influential economic figures, Daim Zainuddin, to put together the reform package. His policies have worried some analysts who feel that he has overreacted and that he should have tried to reduced public spending instead.
