Hobbling industry's growth?
Article Abstract:
Current restrictions imposed by the Malaysian Employees' Provident Fund are seen by private asset managers as disadvantageous in terms of making stock investments. The EPF has restricted the sales of stocks if current prices are below their purchase prices as asset managers have suffered heavily on their EPF investments. The fund's divident fell from 7.7% to 6.7% in 1997. The provident fund has alloted about 1.5 bil ringgit for stock investment while giving 24.6 bil ringgit for equities.

Cash levels draw little flak
Article Abstract:
Majority of the Asian equity fund managers report they are maintaining 20% or more of their funds under management in cash since they are not receiving demands from trustees or investors to be more fully invested. The situation is partly the rule of the land and partly an acknowledgement of the superb bear market gripping Asia, according to participants. Clients in Asia are also more interested in absolute returns and capital preservation.
