Hoist with his own petard
Article Abstract:
President Jiang Zemin of China carried out a state visit to the United States but he did not make as favourable an impression as he would have liked. His comparison of China's invasion of Tibet to the liberation of black slaves was not appreciated by his Washington audience, while his comment that the Tiananmen Massacre was necessary prompted president Clinton to directly criticize the action. Demonstrations were increasingly evident throughout the visit, although a few patriotic Chinese students welcomed him. No mention of demonstrations were made on Chinese media.

Suppressed memories; the Cultural Revolution's anniversary goes unmarked
Article Abstract:
May 16, 1996 is the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolutionary. Both the government and much of China's populace remain silent on the subject of the Cultural Revolution which resulted in the deaths of three million people. Citizens that lived through this event are reluctant to speak about it and the government suppresses all public reflection and restricts all scholarly research on the subject. Harvard University professor Roderick MacFarquhar explains that the Cultural Revolution destroyed the Communist Party's authority.
