Home straight: Hong Kong racing fans flock to Canadian tracks
Article Abstract:
Hastings Park Racecourse in Vancouver, Canada, has tapped a mine of interest among immigrants from Hong Kong via simulcasts of races at the colony's Shatin racetrack. Since they began in early 1994 the late-night showings, starting at 9:30 PM, have regularly drawn 3,000 patrons. Other Canadian venues have followed suit, leading to nationwide betting pools, attracting attendees who bet an average C$260 per night, double the traditional daytime crowd's bets. The snack bar at Hastings Park now lists traditional Chinese items as well, and some Canadian horses now sport Chinese names.

Homeward bound: China's returnees face exciting prospects - and tough challenges
Article Abstract:
China is actively luring home former citizens who left to study abroad and gain advanced degrees in business, law, or applied social sciences. It has had mixed success, drawing back only a third of those in the US and a quarter of them worldwide. Difficult physical and psychological conditions in China are a major problem, as is the returnee centers' inability to deliver on many of their promises. Housing and a frustrating bureaucracy remain the chief complaints, but returnees say they have enormous opportunities.

Dissident's dilemma
Article Abstract:
Being in exile makes it possible to see China more objectively, according to Chinese dissident Wang Ruowang, who has lived in the US since 1992. However, being away from China has brought a number of difficulties. His influence there has waned, and he has found that the scope of his writing has greatly diminished. However, he remains active in a number of areas other than writing. He founded the Chinese Democracy Party in 1995, for example, and produces a monthly tract called Tansuo (Quest).
