Hong Kong's opposition to landfill expansion is growing
Article Abstract:
Plans to make additional reclamation in Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong is facing opposition from residents, who claim that the harbor is getting too small. A survey conducted by the Hong Kong University among 1,000 respondents in 1997, show that 69% are against further reclamation of Victoria Harbor. Proponents of the reclamation, however, contend that it is better to reduce the harbor and protect it at the same time. A considerable portion of the reclaimed land, the proponents say, will be used for roads and railroads for the benefit of everyone. One of the most vigorous groups against the project is the tourism industry, which considers the harbor a major attraction.

PAL fold its wings, unable to solve labor dispute
Article Abstract:
Philippine Airlines (PAL), Asia's oldest airline, folded operations on Sep. 23, 1998, after it failed to resolve a long-standing dispute with its labor union. However, the ground operations of the airline will continue until such time they are sold or merged with MacroAsia, a ground-handling and catering firm also majority-owned by PAL Chairman Lucio Tan. PAL executives have already started the process of liquidation, but they said they will continue working on a rehabilitation plan for the company. All of PAL's 8,700 employees will be terminated as a result of the closure.
