How real is the new economy?
Article Abstract:
The economic performance of the US has been explained in terms of new technology, and has been described as the 'new economy'. growth has been strong, unemployment and inflation low, and productivity has risen. There is a need to examine the evidence in more detail, however, and productivity has risen fastest in computer manufacturing. It is more difficult to estimate productivity in services which cover much of the economy. There could be wider benefits which could raise productivity outside computer manufacturing, but the evidence is unclear.
