Husky and Hutch
Article Abstract:
Li Kashing is one of Hong Kong's biggest stockmarket operator and his moves are eagerly watched because of its convoluted and surprising elements. For example, Li announced a share placement on Hutchinson Whampoa Ltd immediately after the latter reported a mid-year loss. Presumably, a non-earning company, Husky Oil Co, that was acquired earlier by Hutchinson, has much to do with the sorry financial condition of the latter. Li's moves were, in this instance, seen as typical of his predilection toward employing short-term tactics to aggrandize himself while retaining his shareholders' loyalty through long-term strategic policies.

Coyiuto's crown: Oriental battle heads for courts
Article Abstract:
The Philippines' Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) chmn David Castro is determined to wrest control of Oriental Petroleum and Minerals Corp from its current chairman, Robert Coyiuto Jr. The PCGG, tasked with regaining former president Ferdinand Marcos' ill-gotten wealth, charges Oriental investors, headed by Fr Emetrio Barcelon, with misstating their connection with Marcos to 1986 PCGG Commissioner Ramon Diaz. Barcelon, whose sister Amparo is Oriental's vice-chairman, was responsible for Coyiuto's emergence as the firm's head.
