Hynix's creditor accord tied to level of new financing

Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the Korean chip maker responsible for almost 17% of the world's memory chips and nearly 4% of South Korean exports, is trying to raise $1.5 billion through the issue of global depository receipts in Europe and the U.S. The world's number two producer of memory chips has Citigroup Inc. subsidiary Salomon Smith Barney combing some 25 cities for investors that will help Hynix refinance the debt it has accrued. Hynix posted a first-quarter 2001 net loss of 538.9 billion won, compared to a first-quarter 2000 net loss of 49 billion won.

Korean exports sink on drop in electronics, chip demand
Article Abstract:
South Korea's exports have decreased for the fifth month in a row as the demand for semiconductors and consumer electronics continues to decline. Hynix Semiconductor Inc., whose foreign sales account for around 4% of the country's exports, has shut its plant in Eugene, Oregon to save costs. Analysts are interested to see how the Korean government will deal with the slowing economy.

Hynix, Micron mull tie-up: Chip makers could form global DRAM giant
Article Abstract:
Hynix Semiconductor Inc. and Micron Technology Inc. are in talks to form a strategic alliance. The stronger Micron is taking a big risk to try and bail out the struggling Hynix. The semiconductor industry as a whole is dealing with a saturation of the market.
