'I like a brick.' (architect Louis Kahn's Indian Institute of Management) (Cover Story)
Article Abstract:
Architect Louis Kahn devoted much time to the questions of planning, composition and historical precedents, and his ideas on these subjects came together in the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad, which was started in 1962. This building has a sense of agelessness, despite being modern, and is a particularly great achievement against a background of lengthy and complicated design and construction work. While Kahn brought together many of his architectural ideas in the IIM, the project also sparked off new areas of interest, and also led him to conclusions on the use of bricks for loadbearing rather than just for facing purposes.
