Mahindra British Telecom Ltd (MBTL) is the 60:40 joint venture company between Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and British Telecom Ltd (BTL) of the UK. MBTL has emerged as the largest supplier of software solutions to BTL. It has posted a net profit of Rs28.90 crore on a total revenue of Rs101 crore for 1997-98. Offshore services fetch 30 percent of the company's total revenue. It has tied up with BT Martlesham Laboratories to launch co-operative research program in artificial intelligence and intelligent software technologies. The company has set up a software development centre at Pune and is operational since a year. MBTL's net worth is about Rs1,000 crore of which Rs600 crore is accrued to M&M. (gs)

Mahindra & Mahindra's (M&M) scrip which had touched a low of Rs130 during August 1998, has risen to Rs190 currently due to improved performance of its software subsidiary Mahindra British Telecom Ltd. It has sold 7,110 numbers of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in 1997-98 (5,636 units in 1996-97). The sale of multi utility vehicles (MUVs) was 69,901 (69,017). Its tractor division recorded a growth of 24 percent in sales to 71,468 units (57,379 units). Its market share in tractor segment increased to about 27 percent. In the first two months of 1998-99, it sold 11,980 number of tractors (12,319 numbers). (gs)

KOTAK MAHINDRA CAPS' NET JUMPS 73%

The net profit of Kotak Mahindra Capital Company (KMCC) increased by 73 percent to Rs16.51 crore in 1997-98 (Rs9.56 crore in 1996- 97). Its total income increased by about 51 percent to Rs42.47 crore (Rs28.12 crore). It has proposed 100 percent dividend for 1997-98 (65 percent). It is mainly involved in investment banking activities. KMCC is a joint venture of Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd, which holds 72.22 percent stake, and the Goldman Sachs group, which holds 27.78 percent. (khr)
