Article Abstract:
The Indian Petroleum Corporation Ltd (IPCL), Government of India venture, manufactures petrochemical products like polymers, fibre intermediates and chemicals. It has a swing plant to produce low- density polyethylene (LDPE) or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) at Nagothane. It plans to expand the swing plant capacity from 0.135 million tonnes per annum (tpa) to 0.22 million tpa. It plans to modernise and upgrade its Vadodara complex at a cost of Rs20 million. It is setting up a gas complex at Gandhar. It has set up a chlor-alkali unit with a capacity of 0.12 million tpa of chlorine and 0.13 million tpa of caustic soda. Its first phase was commissioned in 1996-97. In the second phase, it plans to set up a 0.3 million tpa ethylene cracker, which will be commissioned in December 1998. It is setting up a 0.1 million tpa acrylonitrile (ACN) plant with an investment of Rs6.5 billion. It posted a turnover of Rs29,829 million and a net profit of Rs2,437 million in 1996-97. IPCL: BUDGET GAINS
Article Abstract:
IPCL, a leading petrochemicals company, stands to benefit from the 4 percent additional customs duty and the depreciation of the rupee against the dollar. The company has increased the price of polypropylene by Rs4000 to Rs42,200 per tonne and HDPE-injection moulding by Rs1,600 to Rs42,375 per tonne. Its third cracker will become operational in 1999-2000. The company has planned a Rs26,000 crore capital expenditure programme in sectors like petrochemicals, refining and power to achieve sales of Rs230,000 crore by 2010 AD. Its scrip is currently trading at Rs58. (khr)
