It is predicted the in-home fitness market will be worth 257 million pounds sterling by the year 2003, at 1999 prices. It is anticipated sales of equipment will have risen by 35% in real terms between 1994-1999, to the value of 184 million pounds sterling in 1999. The most popular item of equipment are exercise bikes, which accounted for 22% of the market in 1998. The sale of free weights grew by 44% during 1995-1998. Some 29% of sales of in-home fitness equipment, in the UK, were made by mail order, during 1998. Visual aids, such as celebrity exercise videos are also popular.

Sporting activities in the 'great outdoors'

Outdoor sports are becoming increasingly popular and the market for sports goods covering activities such as rambling, mountaineering and pot holing is estimated at 620 million pounds sterling and accounts for some 22% of total sports goods sales of 2.82 billion pounds sterling. It is expected that the outdoor goods market in 1996 will be split between clothing, worth 380 million pounds sterling; footwear, worth 170 million pounds sterling and equipment, worth 70 million pounds sterling. An analysis of the market for outdoor equipment is presented in further detail.
