Eastward ho! Bhutto seeks Southeast Asian trade in investment
Article Abstract:
Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's initiative seeking more trade with and investment from Southeast Asia is paying off, though Karachi's troubles still discourage investors. Malaysia is now building a $100 million oil terminal near Karachi and will explore in Pakistan for gas and oil, and with Singapore it is financing three power-generation projects. Pakistan has long relied too heavily on the West for aid and business ties, Bhutto's aides say, while the East still shows much room for expansion.
