In search of a boost
Article Abstract:
The Singapore government is undertaking a review into ways of injecting new life into the Singapore banking system. The four big Singapore banks are amongst the most successful in Southeast Asia, but the review follows statesman Lee Kuan Yew's admonition that the banks need to shape up to face increasing global competition. The financial sector review will consider ways of boosting Singapore as a financial centre. It will look at the financial regulations, and will examine issues including offshore loans, allowing increased participation of foreign banks, and ways of making domestic banks more competitive.

Megabyte heaven
Article Abstract:
Malaysian concern Trans Capital Holding is expected to see very strong growth following the launch in Jul 1998 of its new high-speed, high-density disk drive. Each of the 2.2-gigabyte Orb disks is able to hold 380,000 pages of text or an hour of movie images and sound. The technology was developed by Indian-born entrepreneur Syed Iftikar, who looked at Taiwan, China, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and Singapore before deciding to have the disks manufactured in Malaysia. He selected Trans Capital because all members of that company's senior management team had experience of hard drives.
