In telecom wars, advertisers win
Article Abstract:
The advertising industry would be most benefited by the pending deregulation of European Union's telephony on Jan. 1, 1998. This view is supported by Jean-Marie Dru, the chairman and founder of advertising agency BDDP of France, stressing that 50% of the gain in BDDP's billings in 1998 came from telecommunications alone. Total advertising budget by telephone firms in French media increased by 66% in 1997, to F2.12 billion, compared with F1.28 billion in 1996, according to market researcher SECODIP of France. Meanwhile, Telefonica, which emerged as the largest advertising spender in Spain, boosted its advertising spending by 7% to $93 million.

Asian economic crisis may hurt Remy Cointreau
Article Abstract:
Remy Cointreau S.A., a manufacturer of cognac and other beverages from France, suffered during the year ended on Mar. 31, 1998, $112 million in record losses. Remy Cointreau blamed the development on its poor Asian cognac revenues and a mistake on currency hedging. The company is expected by market analysts to experience market problems as a result of economic factors, such as the economic downturn in Asia, and structural factors.
