Indian summer in store for privatisation process?
Article Abstract:
The Indian government remains determined to press ahead with its privatization programme, despite the Asian economic crisis. This is partly because of the state of the country's public finances, with the budget deficit reaching unsustainable levels. There are plans to sell stakes in container transport concern Container Corp of India, telecommunications operator Videsh Sanchar Nigan Ltd, Gas Authority of India Ltd and Indian Oil Co. The sales of four mining concerns, the Indian Tourism Development Corp, Indian Air and Air India are also planned.

Measuring the privatisation effect
Article Abstract:
Guinness Flight Hambro introduced the Privatisation Index in August 1997. The Index monitors the performance of the 200 privatisation shares world wide, and it has revealed that privatisation investment takes the edge over world equities in terms of profitability. To qualify in the listing, companies need to have or have had a government holding of at least 5% for 10 years. Companies are removed from the list 10 years after privatisation.
