The newly created Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA) has emerged as the most powerful player in corporate Indonesia. It is made up of the elite class of former bankers who are empowered to seize assets from borrowers who cannot pay their debts. They are also granted the power to shape up the management of a firm by firing and appointing directors. It is expected that IBRA will play a more critical role the business sector over the years as it decides who gets to invest in major industries.

Indonesia should forge ahead with privatization
Article Abstract:
Indonesia plans to reduce its deficit in 2001 to 2.4%of gross domestic product by reducing its electricty and fuel subsidies as well as increasing the rate of privatization. There is an urgency to sell assets in the face of Indonesia's current domestic and foreign debt.

Indonesia plans to cut its deficit to 32.5% of GDP in 2002 by moves including a cut in fuel and electricity subsidies and an increase in the rate of privatization. The national budget calls for $3 bil in asset sales in 2001.
