Indonesia's next president
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's assembly is to select a new president, and the candidates include B.J. Habibie, the existing president, and Megawati Sukarnoputri, opposition leader who won most votes in elections in Jun 1999. She has not proven adept at making alliances, nor have her reform policies been clear on specific details, and this leaves a third candidate, Abdurrahman Wahid, as a possibility. He heads the largest Muslim organization world wide, and could be a good president, though he has health problems. Megawati may be chosen, but there is concern about the role of the Indonesian armed forces in any new government.

A president on a limp mission
Article Abstract:
Indonesian president, Abdurrahman Wahid, has visited Aceh province, and has stayed in a part of Aceh less affected by violence, due to concerns over his safety. He spoke to a selected audience, rather than to community or guerrilla representatives and has promised some economic aid, but has not tackled the issue of secession, leaving this to local leaders. Wahid argues that Indonesia could break up if Aceh is given independence, and may hope that economic aid will help to weaken the campaign for indepedence.
