Article Abstract:
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) was formed in 1981 in the aftermath of the Iran-Iraq War, by Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It was set up to encourage cooperation on foreign, defence, cultural, social and economic policies, and is considered a commercially coherent market, though it has not formed a common market or customs union. Bahrain is diversifying to reduce its dependence on oil, with the development of refining, smelting, shipbuilding and offshore banking industries. Kuwait has nearly 10% of the world's oil reserves and is entering the global petrochemicals market.

Bittersweet return
Article Abstract:
The 15 Japanese wives of North Koreans who visited Japan in mid-Nov 1997 have clearly been strongly influenced by living in North Korea for almost 40 years. They stated that they had enjoyed their time in Japan, but that they were looking forward to returning to North Korea. They emphasized that they live comfortably in North Korea, even though the country is currently experience difficulties and requires more assistance from Japan. Considerable efforts were made by Japan to ensure that none of the women attempted to defect.
